Do Goldfish Need a Heater and Filter?

Goldfish have the opposite reputation to what they need. They are sold as easy bowl pets, but they are actually large, messy fish that demand serious filtration and space. Get that wrong and no amount of care saves them.

Heater: usually not

Common and comet goldfish are cold-water fish. They are comfortable at typical room temperature and do not need a heater, though they appreciate stability rather than big swings. Fancy goldfish (the round, ornate types) are a little more sensitive to cold, and a gentle heater to avoid the low end can help, but even they do not want tropical warmth. For most goldfish, the heater budget is better spent on filtration.

Filter: yes, and oversize it

This is where goldfish keepers go wrong. Goldfish eat a lot and produce a lot of waste, so they load a tank far faster than a similar-sized tropical fish. They need strong biological filtration, and it pays to oversize the filter beyond the usual turnover for the tank. A filter that takes bulk biological media rather than small throwaway cartridges keeps up better and costs less over time.

The real killer: too little water

The bowl is the myth that does the damage. A goldfish in a bowl or a couple of gallons is swimming in its own waste within days, because there is not enough water to dilute the ammonia and not enough filter to process it.
