Aquarium weight calculator

How much will your tank weigh once it is filled? Add the water, substrate, rock and the tank itself for the total load — the number you need before you trust a stand or a floor.

Tank dimensions

Water is the bulk of the load, so the total climbs fast. Get the substrate figure from the substrate calculator.

Filled, it weighs about
300lb (136 kg)
about 28 gallons of water
Water234 lb
Substrate20 lb
Rock & decor10 lb
Empty tank36 lb
Check the stand and floor are rated for this. A filled tank puts a lot of weight on a small footprint, so a purpose-built aquarium stand is safest above about 20 gallons.

Why the number matters

Water weighs about 8.34 pounds per gallon, so a filled tank is heavy fast and concentrates that weight on a small footprint. A 40-gallon tank is well over 400 pounds filled — more than most non-aquarium furniture is built to hold.

What goes into the total

The calculator adds four things: the water (from your dimensions), the substrate, any rock and hardscape, and the empty tank itself. The empty-tank figure defaults to a rough estimate for glass; if you have the manufacturer's spec weight, use that for a precise total. Get an accurate substrate figure from the substrate calculator.

Stand and floor

Above about 20 gallons, use a purpose-built aquarium stand rather than general furniture — it is designed to carry a concentrated load without flexing. For large tanks, also think about where the weight lands on the floor, ideally over a load-bearing wall or joists.

Source

  1. Water = (L × W × H ÷ 231) × 8.34 lb/gal; total = water + substrate + rock + empty tank. Empty-tank default ≈ 1.3 lb per gallon (rough glass estimate; use the spec weight where available).

Common questions

How much does a 40-gallon fish tank weigh?

Filled, well over 400 pounds. Water alone is about 8.34 pounds per gallon, so 40 gallons is around 330 pounds of water before you add substrate, rock and the tank itself. The calculator totals all of it.

How much does a 55-gallon aquarium weigh full?

Roughly 600 pounds once you include water (about 460 pounds), substrate, rock and the glass. Always use a stand rated for that load.

Can my furniture hold a fish tank?

Only for very small tanks. Above about 20 gallons the concentrated weight needs a purpose-built aquarium stand, and large tanks should sit over a load-bearing wall or joists. Check the total with the calculator first.
