Best powerheads & wave makers
Independent rankings of aquarium wave makers and powerheads by flow, controllability and value, from a nano pump to a controllable cross-flow for a 135-gallon tank.
For most tanks the hygger 18W Cross Flow is the wave maker to buy: wide, adjustable current with an LED controller for tanks up to 135 gallons. Want programmable flow for less? The hygger 10W is the value pick. On a nano or small tank, the hygger Mini or nano pump adds gentle flow cheaply. Reef keepers who want tunable gyre current should look at the AQUASMITH. Aim for enough turnover to leave no dead spots, but keep it gentle for a planted or community tank.
hygger 18W Adjustable Cross Flow Wave Maker
The best all-round wave maker: an 18W cross-flow pump with an LED display controller and a magnetic mount, rated for tanks up to 135 gallons, for both reef and planted tanks. Well-reviewed and genuinely adjustable.

Community consensus
Keepers match flow to livestock, warning that a strong pump that suits an SPS reef will stress fish and uproot plants in a community tank. Cross-flow and gyre pumps are favoured for even, gentle current, and controllable DC pumps with a feed mode are popular on reefs. hygger comes up repeatedly as the value brand, with the premium names reserved for high-flow SPS systems.

What we didn't pick
- EcoTech VorTech and Maxspect Gyre premium pumpsconsidered 2026-10-06
The high-end reef flow standard with the best control and reliability, but priced well above this list; a premium step-up for serious SPS reefs.
- Cheap uncontrolled blast powerheadsconsidered 2026-10-06
Fine for a sump or a dead spot, but too harsh as a tank's main flow for most community and planted setups; favour an adjustable cross-flow instead.
Buying guide
How much flow, and what kind
Flow needs vary enormously by tank type, so match the pump to the livestock, not just the gallons.
| Tank | Typical total flow |
|---|---|
| Community / planted | 10-20x turnover, gentle |
| Fish-only saltwater | 20-30x turnover |
| Reef (soft/LPS) | 20-40x turnover |
| Reef (SPS) | 40x+ turnover, strong |
Cross-flow vs point flow
A cross-flow or gyre pump spreads a wide sheet of current across the tank, which suits planted and most reef tanks and avoids a harsh jet. A traditional point powerhead throws a focused stream, useful for aiming at a dead spot or for high-flow SPS corals.
Controllable is worth it on a reef
A controllable DC pump lets you set wave and pulse modes and a feed mode that pauses flow at feeding time. On a reef that varied flow keeps detritus suspended for the filter to catch; on a community tank a simple fixed pump is usually enough.
Placement and safety
Magnetic mounts make placement easy; keep the magnet within the rated glass thickness. Point flow across the surface for gas exchange, avoid aiming straight at plants or timid fish, and keep intakes guarded around shrimp and fry.
