The 30-second answer

For a reef that will grow demanding corals, the NICREW HyperReef 100 Gen 2 is the pick — 100W of blue-and-violet spectrum with full programmable control for LPS and SPS. For a nano or small reef, the NICREW NavaReef 65W is the best value and the highest-rated here. Lighting a pico or soft-coral tank on a budget? The hygger 36W or the 22W clip-on do it cheaply. Match the light's power to your corals: soft corals need far less than SPS.

★ Best overall

NICREW HyperReef 100 Gen 2 LED Reef Light

The best all-round reef light here: 100W of violet-and-blue-heavy spectrum with a wide-angle lens and fully programmable 5-channel control, enough PAR to keep demanding LPS and SPS corals.

NICREW NavaReef 135W LED Reef Light
The large-tank reef pick: 135W of blue-focused output with a narrow-angle lens for penetration, built to drive LPS and SPS coral growth across a bigger or deeper reef.
4
80Solid pick
hygger 36W Saltwater Reef Light
The nano-reef budget pick: a 36W coral light with a timer and adjustable colour and brightness, sized for a 16 to 20-inch marine tank. Enough for soft corals without the premium price.
5
78Solid pick
hygger Clip-On 24/7 Saltwater LED Light, 22W
The pico-reef and clip-on pick: a 22W saltwater light with sunrise-to-moonlight 24/7 and DIY modes that clips onto a small marine tank, the cheapest way to light soft corals.

Community consensus

Reef keepers stress matching light to coral type, since soft corals need a fraction of what SPS demand, and warn against using freshwater or planted lights on a reef because the spectrum is wrong. NICREW's reef line is rated a strong budget-to-mid option, with AI and Kessil as the premium step-up. Keepers also emphasise PAR at depth and acclimating corals to new lighting gradually.

What we didn't pick

  • AI Prime 16HD and Kessil A-seriesconsidered 2026-10-06

The premium reef standard with excellent PAR and control, but priced well above this list and often sold through specialty channels; a premium step-up rather than a default value pick.

  • Fish-only blue 'marine' barsconsidered 2026-10-06

Fine for viewing a fish-only-with-live-rock tank, but they lack the PAR and spectrum to actually grow corals, so they do not belong in a coral-lighting ranking.

Buying guide

Match the light to your corals

Coral light demand rises steeply from soft corals to SPS. Buy for what you intend to keep, not just tank size.

Corals Light demand
Soft (zoas, mushrooms) Low, a nano fixture is plenty
LPS (hammers, torches) Medium
SPS (acropora, montipora) High, needs strong PAR and a tighter lens

Spectrum, not just brightness

Corals use a blue-and-violet-heavy spectrum, which is why reef lights look blue. A white, full-spectrum planted light has the wrong colour balance and too little blue for coral growth, no matter how bright.

PAR and mounting height

It is PAR reaching the coral that matters, and PAR falls fast with depth and distance. A narrow-angle lens pushes light deeper for a tall tank but needs correct mounting height; a wide lens covers a shallow tank more evenly. Program a gradual photoperiod and acclimate new corals by starting dimmer and ramping up over a couple of weeks to avoid bleaching.

Don't overbuy

A soft-coral or fish-with-live-rock tank does not need a 100W SPS fixture. Overpowering a soft-coral tank bleaches corals and feeds algae; size the light to the livestock.
